ViTAL talk to feature Reginio: the Deaf Community and FSL

The Linguistic Society of the Philippines invites researchers, linguists, educators, students, and all those interested in Deaf communities and signed languages to the next LSP Virtual Talk on Applied Linguistics (ViTAL).

This upcoming session, Beyond Studying Language and Culture: Researching the Deaf Community and FSL, opens space for thoughtful discussion on how language research can engage more meaningfully with Deaf communities and with Filipino Sign Language (FSL).

About the talk

This ViTAL session explores how hearing researchers and linguists can approach research with Deaf communities in ways that are respectful, responsive, and grounded in lived experience.

The talk invites participants to reflect on what it means to study language and culture while also recognizing the rights, experiences, and perspectives of Deaf people in a hearing-dominated society. It also highlights the need to broaden linguistic inquiry by recognizing and including signed languages as part of serious and meaningful language research.

Rather than treating signed languages as peripheral, this session encourages a wider view of language, one that includes Filipino Sign Language and the communities who use it.

The session will be led by Assistant Professor Mark Kevin Reginio of the Department of Anthropology, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of the Philippines.
